Herbal Dry Skin Salve (with chamomile, calendula, & roses)

[dropcap]W[/dropcap]hen skin is dry it can be itchy and uncomfortable. Lotions can be helpful, but sometimes something a little stronger is needed. A beautiful salve is a perfect fit for dry skin. Emollient in nature, salve’s are intensely moisturizing and soothing to itchy, rough, bothersome dry skin. 

First, What is a Salve?

Salves are typically made from oil and beeswax and have a softer consistency than balms (although the terms “balm” and “salve” are often used interchangeably (as you can read in this detailed post we have right here).

Carrier oils can be infused with various herbs to create a customized salve, suitable for your particular ailment. Today we will be making a salve with carrier oil that has been infused with roses, chamomile, and calendula.

Beeswax is used to thicken the salve. It’s easiest to buy beeswax in pastille form.

This salve could be made with a variety of carrier oils, such as sweet almond, avocado, jojoba, and a few other liquid carrier oils. I chose to use a light olive oil for this recipe, but you can choose any liquid carrier perfect for your skin type.

Chamomile’s apple-like fragrance is sweet and comforting. It’s helpful in many homemade skincare treatments. This salve includes chamomile in order to harness it’s anti-inflammatory properties.

Well-known for its ability to soothe the skin, calendula is included in this salve to promote healing.

This ingredient is optional, but it does add a lovely fragrance (and is one of our top 10 calming essential oils). Geranium’s sweet, floral scent compliments the selected herbs in this dry skin salve very well.

DIY Herbal Dry Skin Salve (with chamomile, calendula, & roses) (2.3OZ)

Supplies/Ingredients

• 1/2 oz Beeswax (naturally derived beeswax pastilles)
• 5 oz (or approximately 2/3 cup) Carrier Oil (organic, cold-pressed sweet almond oil works well in this recipe, or try any other from our informative post about carrier oils)
• 1/4 oz Roses (dried organic red rose petals)
• 1/4 oz Chamomile (dried organic chamomile)
• 1/4 oz Calendula (dried organic calendula)
• 5-6 drops Rose Geranium Essential Oil (organic geranium essential oil)

• Step One: Infuse the Carrier Oil & Strain

  Carrier oils may be infused in a few different ways. If you have time and are working in advance, try the solar method.

Close jar and leave herbs to infuse in a sunny spot for 2-3 weeks.

Make sure your lid is secured tightly and your herbs are totally submerged into the carrier oil.
As you think of it, stop by and give your jar a gentle shake every now and then. Stir to combine. (Try to submerge all of the herbs, but don’t worry if they are not completely covered). Preheat oven to 300 degrees and place bowl with her/oil mixture into the oven. Turn the oven off and leave to infuse for 3-4 hours.

It will look like here are more herbs than oil! • Step Two: Make the Salve

  To make the salve, place the infused carrier oil and beeswax into the top of a double boiler (a glass bowl over a low temperature, not boiling pot of shallow water).

  Warm until melted.

  Once melted, transfer to jars or tins. Add a few drops of essential oil, if using. Stir with a toothpick to disperse.

  Leave to cool, then cap and label.

Customize the consistency of your salve by changing the amount of beeswax. For a softer salve, use a bit less beeswax, for a firmer slave, use a bit more beeswax.

Salve should keep for 3-6 months.
