DIY Skin Lightening Serum for Acne Scars & Hyperpigmentation

Last Updated on

I struggled with acne for years. It’s hard to put into words how much it can impact your self-confidence, but if you’ve ever had any issues with your skin, you know what I’m talking about. I spent a lot of time looking for ways to clear up my acne. Many of the methods I tried would sort of work for awhile… but ultimately the results never lasted. What eventually helped me with my skin was living #LifeFromScratch. As I started eating more real, clean food and using natural, homemade skincare products (like my DIY facial serums and using tea tree oil for acne), my skin became healthier… along with the rest of me!

What was left behind, though? Dark spots and scars from years of acne all over my face!

I decided to deal with them the same way: by using plant-based, nontoxic oils to fade them. If you have dark acne scars or other forms of hyperpigmentation on your skin, you are going to love this DIY skin serum. It totally helped me to feel better about my own skin.

Hey there, Faith! I’m not sure what you mean by original lemon oil. We recommend this lemon oil if that helps you. Do you know about how long have you been using this serum? You may just be experiencing a transition period with the serum. Let me know if you have any other questions!

I live in Nigeria, I’ve become so dark because Nigeria is very hot and sunny…I wanna ask if I can use lemon oil on my face every night

    1. Kassidy Kalberer

I would not suggest using straight lemon oil on your face. If you use it in a recipe like the one above it most definitely is okay to use every night. That being said use it only at night! Hope this helps 😊

Sure! We don’t see a problem with adding the serum to your body lotion. I will suggest only using it at night because of the lemon oil. Let us know how it works for you!

Hi there! This is a great question! Results may vary for everybody since we all have different skin types. That being said, you should be seeing results in a few weeks or so. I hope this helps you!

Appreciate you for sharing your recipe on how to make the oil. Thank you .

I leave in Nigeria and am fair but I have gone pretty dark now, my concern is there are too many people selling skin lightening oil and even the one I bought isn’t doing anything for my skin and it’s expensive. My question – Does the oil combination have sun screen in them and can I use it as my day and night body cream. Also Nigeria is hot and sunny. Hope to hear from you soon.

Rosemary – definitely don’t use lemon oil out in the sun. Lemon, along with bergamot, grapefruit, lime, bitter orange and cumin are all photosensitive oils and when using a photosensitive essential oil topically, avoidance of sunlight is recommended for up to 12 hours after use because if your skin is exposed to sunlight (which gives off UV radiation) after topical application of a photosensitive oil, the skin may become temporarily darkly pigmented, red, or irritated and can cause a chemical reaction on the skin. Best to use these kind of oils at night time

Thank you for sharing your DIY skin lightening recipe! Can you tell me if I can substitute Almond Oil for Aragon oil instead?

I use a drop or two of almond or other essential oils, massage it well and then after 5-7 minutes or max 10 minutes blot away excess with a single ply tissue. Helps with my oily skin and I have not faced no clogged pore or breakout issue with any sort of oil.

Hello! We suggest 5 drops of bergamot essential oil. Be sure to ask your aromatherapist before hand though. Happy DIYing 😊
