Certified Organic Cocoa Butter Summary

Cocoa butter is an edible fat obtained from the cacao bean pod. One of the most popular and well known body butters, it is naturally high in vitamin E to help hydrate and soothe skin, and contains natural antioxidants. Because it is a fantastic thickening agent you will often find cocoa butter in lipsticks, lip balms, soaps, and creams. It helps to create an amazing whipped body butter.

The texture tends to be creamy and yellowish in color and it has a heavenly light chocolate scent and feels delicious on your skin.

Cocoa butter is a rich and creamy natural moisturizer. As mentioned above, cocoa butter is a fat, but it is a stable fat, but will “melt” when applied to your skin. This means that natural cocoa butter simply soak into your skin for easy absorption (it’s like your skin drinks it). When cocoa butter “melts” into your skin, it is not only incredibly moisturizing, but also provides that nice barrier needed for protection.

Cocoa butter has an unusually high amount of antioxidants, which means that it helps grab up free radicals that could otherwise inflict damage in your skin. You’ve also probably heard that antioxidants help with aging, and cocoa butter is no different. In fact, some studies show that cocoa butter can greatly help in reducing both stretch marks and scars. Finally, because of these antioxidants the shelf life of cocoa butter is several years (upward of five), which is often unheard of for natural butters and oils.

The rich, slightly chocolate-y (but not overwhelming, in the least) natural aroma of cocoa butter is…UhMaaaZing. The scent is known to relax people and help relieve stress. I know that it does for me! When mixed with appropriate carrier oils and essential oils, even more beautiful scents will evolve: delicate, rich, natural, etc. This is why cocoa butter is an excellent base, as it mixes very well with many other oils.

Low Allergen Risk–
Cocoa butter is not considered a high allergen product. In fact, it is quite rare to have an allergy to cocoa butter. In my itchy, allergy-ridden home, this means a lot to me.

Cocoa Butter As Food

Cocoa butter is suuuper healthy and yet under-utilized in the cooking world. Perhaps many of you have used cocoa butter in DIY skin care products. Yes, it’s a nourishing butter for our bodies, but not just for our external bodies. Internally, too, cocoa butter has a delicious nutritional profile!

When nutritionists look at fats in foods they look at the saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated content. The Weston A. Price Foundation and Paleo functional medical practitioners have helped us to see that foods high in poly-unsaturated fats, such as sunflower and safflower oil, are not desirable in the human diet.

In stark contrast to the dietary advice we’ve received from the FDA over the last 50 years, we now know that saturated fats, when sourced properly, are good for us. Cholesterol is needed for every function in our bodies and mono-unsaturated fat, too, is good, in lesser ratio to saturated fat.

So where does that put cocoa butter? In very good standing:

Saturated Fats- 57-64%
Monounsaturated Fats- 29-43%
Polyunsaturated Fats- 0-5%

We have several food recipes on our Scratch Mommy blog, but this is one of my favorites – Sprouted Hazelnut Cocoa Butter!


  • 2 cups sprouted hazelnuts (sprout your nuts for improved digestion)
  • .8 oz cocoa butter

Make It:

  1. Place hazelnuts and cocoa butter in work bowl of food processor. Process for about 4.5 minutes, or longer for some models, until nut puree is liquidy and mostly smooth.
  2. Transfer to refrigerator container with lid and chill 2-3 hours before serving.
  3. Note- Nut butter will be quite firm but melt slightly (nicely) when placed on a warm baked good.

Add up to 2 T raw honey or stevia, to taste, for a sweeter butter; additionally, add 1-2 T unsweetened cocoa powder for a truer cocoa-based Nutella-like spread. Also, you can add 1 t cinnamon or ½ t celtic sea salt.
