Equipment

  • 1 Double-boiler - I make my own with a glass bowl over a simmering pot of shallow H2O.

Ingredients

  • 1.5 oz Carrier oil of choice
  • 1 oz Shea butter
  • 0.5 oz Cocoa butter
  • 0.5 oz Beeswax
  • teaspoon Vitamin E oil
  • 0.5 oz Zinc oxide - non-nano, cosmetic grade
  • Cacao powder - see instructions & notes

Instructions

  • Using a double boiler, gently melt the carrier oil, shea butter, cocoa butter, and beeswax until fully liquefied.
  • Remove from heat and allow the mixture to cool slightly.
  • Whisk in vitamin E oil.
  • Slowly incorporate zinc oxide and cacao powder, whisking thoroughly to avoid clumps.
  • Adjust color gradually, testing a small amount on the jawline as you go.
  • Pour into a clean jar and allow to set completely before use.

Notes

Adjusting the Shade
This foundation is intentionally customizable.
  • Too light? Add a small amount of cacao powder.
  • Too dark? Rebalance with the base zinc.
Make adjustments slowly. A very small amount of cacao goes a long way.
