Certified Organic Plantain Leaf Summary

Plantain is a common weed that easily grows in many places. You can use plantain leaf in tea, in tincture form, in herbal glycerites, and as an external compress. It is is great at killing and preventing infections, too. As such, historically and still today, many people use plantain leaf directly on cuts as a bandage.

Medicinally, plantain leaf is approved by the German Commission E for respiratory catarrhs and mild inflammation of the oral and pharyngeal mucosa. It has traditionally been used for upper respiratory support, and topically plantain leaf is used for minor cuts, bruises, and even stings.

Plantain Leaf As Food

The leaves of plantain are quite edible, and are often cooked as greens or used in salads. Plantain is very high in vitamins A and C and is also a rich source of calcium.

DIY Plantain Salve (heals & soothes!)

Ingredients:

Make It:

  1. Infuse your carrier oil with the dried plantain – just put them in a clean jar together and let it sit for a week. (It’s okay if you wait longer – it will only make your salve more potent! You may need to add more oil if you wait longer, but that’s okay, right?)
  2. Strain the oil out into a clean jar.
  3. Melt your beeswax using a double boiler. Watch it carefully!
  4. Add your infused oil to the beeswax as soon as the beeswax is melted. The cooler oil may cause parts of the beeswax to become solid again, but just stir it gently as it heats up until it’s all mixed together well. Remove it from heat as soon as it’s completely liquid and combined.
  5. You can add 10 drops of tea tree oil to add more antibacterial properties and to help preserve the salve. Stir it in!
  6. Pour the liquid into a tin or jar for storage. It will harden as it cools… and it’s ready!

DIY Plantain Salve Uses:

  • Soothe insect bites and bee stings
  • Prevent infection and speed up healing of cuts and scrapes
  • Soothe poison ivy, poison oak, and sumac rashes
  • Soothe irritated skin
