DIY Beard Oil For Him (and for you!)

I am not gonna lie: my dear husband has no sense of smell. I think he compensates for it with other senses – like he’s (somehow) still repulsed by a dirty diaper or by vomit that didn’t make it to the toilet. Just because he sees it. Maybe he’s got Spidey vision or Superman’s x-ray vision to make up for his lack of smell.

Anyway, you know how husbands sometimes give us gifts that are *ahem* more for them? Well, even though my hubby can’t really smell it, I’ve made this beard oil for him — the dude who can’t smell – which means it’s more for me! I’ve always liked facial hair on my guy, even before Movember was a thing.

In our 20+ years of marriage, my man has sported everything from a goatee to a short, thick beard, and variations in between. Given how well-endowed we are in our family genetics, at least when it comes to facial hair, I’m guessing my four sons will come into their own preferences soon. Our oldest son is sixteen years old and I sometimes look at him and wonder how attractive he’ll look with a close-cropped beard. It’s not that I want to rush him in the least – y’all know we mommies wish we could preserve every single moment in our kiddos’ lives – but so far he’s only been able to use my anti-acne formulas. So I kinda sorta can’t wait for him to use my beard oil, too!

During my evidence-based aromatherapy studies at Vintage Remedies, it became a natural extension of my work to come up with something that my husband could use on his beard. And here’s the thing: even though he has no sense of smell, he still benefits. Know how I know? Because our oldest daughter has had headaches, viruses, and congestion totally cleared up by essential oil blends I’ve created for her. And she can’t smell a thing, either.

Hmm… I wonder if it’s hereditary…

In any case, he can still benefit from its use as the oils in this particular blend are not just fresh, clean, and ‘manly,’ but they also have very specific benefits that I’m sure any of us can appreciate. And whose hard-working hubby couldn’t use a little calm and relaxation in a bottle? Just don’t let them in on the fact that this blend can be as helpful to them as a stress-free spa day can be to us!

This beard oil smells ahhmazing. And so hubby will be using it – for me!

My supplies

Camellia seed oil is high in antioxidants, nourishes mature skin, is easily absorbed, and revitalizes skin and hair, with a smooth non-greasy finish.

DIY Beard Balm for Him – and for You! (3OZ)

Supplies/Ingredients

Make It

  • Fill your bottle with camellia seed oil.
  • Add the essential oils.
  • Now fill your bottle with jojoba oil.
  • Shake well before each use.
  • Take about half a dime-sized amount of beard balm, rub between the palms of your hands, and massage into your beard.
  • Take a deep breath and ahhhhhh!

Cautions

Australian sandalwood essential oil should be avoided by those taking tricyclic antidepressants, antipsychotic medications, certain antihistamines, and SSRIs due to potential interactions. Because Bergamot essential oil is phototoxic, if yours is not bergaptine-free, then use no more than 11 total drops to avoid phototoxicity.

Yields approx 3 oz in a roughly 1.7% dilution rate. The recommended dilution ratio for safe use of essential oils on the skin is 2%, so you could still add about six more drops of an essential oil of your choosing (I’d try adding some patchouli next time!) and still stay within safe guidelines.
